The Alexander Technique, introduced by Australian actor Frederick Matthias Alexander in the 1890s, is a form of movement therapy that teaches posture awareness through verbal cues and touch in order to reduce muscular and mental tension and to improve overall wellbeing.

Proponents of the Alexander Technique maintain that many individuals have been conditioned to move their bodies incorrectly and inefficiently. By retraining the body in habitual movements, such as sitting and walking, an individual can optimize movement, increase balance, reduce stress, and relieve pain.

Lessons are private and typically last between 30 minutes and an hour. Multiple lessons are often necessary in order to retrain the body with most success.

Recent studies have shown that the Alexander Technique helps treat lower back pain and the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
